Rain. Finally, rain in Middleburg. Good, long, steady rain for the last few days. We need it.
Of course, we’re doing all the barn chores this week so not ideal, but we’ll take it. We slopped and sloshed around the front field this morning. Apse, Kiss, Blue and EP appreciating and enjoying the attention. Nothing like the smell of wet horses. Toads and worms moving around quicker than the horses and the horsemen.
Plenty of action Saturday. We entered Lorraine against the boys going 1 ½ miles on the turf at Laurel Park. Of course, it’s weather dependent. We’ve entered the 3-year-old filly numerous times since July 27 and have managed to run her once. Who would have ever thought maiden races for fillies and mares on the turf struggle to fill in the Mid-Atlantic? The vagaries of the demand for full fields. Frustrating part of the sport.
Mission Brief, Palio, Queens Empire and Potus hit the overnight at Shawan Downs. Participation is not weather dependent but perhaps performance is…we’ll see. Anxious to get them back out there. Mission Brief has been away for over a year. Palio returns against allowance foes after his big win over maidens at Colonial Downs. Queens Empire and Potus took the summer off and get back to work.
Rumor has it Papa Joe is trying to get to Shawan Downs. Make sure you say hello. He’ll be at the top of the hill, looking for a bet and a winner.
We bought a couple of new horses this week and are looking for more. Restocking/rebuilding for 2025. The dream begins here.
