Aiken Bound

One more road trip before the season finishes. The Aiken Steeplechase offers a crescendo. Seven competitive races. Most of the championships are locked up, the trainer’s title still on the line. It will be the first time to the new course for me. Not many courses I haven’t seen in this country, this might be the last one on the list. England, Ireland, Australia…that’s another story. I hate the bucket list, feels like things sink to the bottom of the bucket and never surface.

Next year, it sounds like the two meets will be on the final Saturday and Sunday of the season. A race for every horse. Action-packed, that will make it easier on the hours and the wheels. Credit to both meets. Aiken for finding a new venue and recreating its spot on the local economy and the national stage. Colonial Cup for returning to the docket, eight years in the making. Not many race meets come back. Here’ hoping for Block House and Queen’s Cup. Oh, where have you gone Rolling Rock?

Penicillin Success and Palio will be our final two steeplechase starters in 2024. Both have won this year. A little Christmas money would go a long way. Lorraine may go to Turfway Park in early December, she’ll be the final starter on the year. It’s been a battle finding suitable races for her, frustrating but not surprising.

Reading A Bettor Way of Thinking by Matt Miller. I met Matt at Del Mar a few weeks ago. Matt, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge in 2021, offers a different take on wagering and life. Interesting read.
