Friday action

Whew, hectic Friday. The day before the Gold Cup. The day before the Kentucky Derby. The day before the final day of Punchestown.

Written and made picks for a steeplechase preview, sent in selections for Oaks Day (Garlic Rob has swept the card so far) and Derby Day. Printed passes for tomorrow, delivered a few, organized a few. Picked up my tux shirt from the cleaners for the gala tonight. Yes, the gala. Celebrating 100 years of the Virginia Gold Cup. My first was sometime in the 70s. The old course. The beautiful, tactical course, a perfect bowl for steeplechasing. Joe Aitcheson Jr. said you had to jump the inside panel at every fence to win the Gold Cup. He did eight times on eight different horses.

Short downpour in Marshall, the next town from The Plains, hometown of the Virginia Gold Cup, this afternoon. Then the sun, not sure it’ll make any difference to the ground.

See you tomorrow.
