The chestnut champion earned two Eclipse Awards, won 11 stakes, smashed the single-season earnings mark he set in 2007 when winning five Grade I stakes from five starts in 2008. The Maryland-bred boasted eight Grade I victories, including the American Grand National, Iroquois (twice), Georgia Cup, Lonesome Glory (twice) and Colonial Cup (twice).

The son of Concern won 13 career steeplechase races and led all NSA earners in 2008 with a record $485,520. His career bankroll of $1,006,493 placed him second on the all-time NSA money list. Owned by Sonny Via and trained by Jack Fisher, Good Night Shirt retired in 2010 as just one of two steeplechase horses to win over $1 million. Originally owned and campaigned on the flat by Riverdee Stable, he was sold to owner Sonny Via and trainer Jack Fisher before embarking on his record steeplechase career. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2017.
