Cool Jet wheeled back in seven days to take the Grade 1 Commonwealth Cup at the Virginia Gold Cup Saturday.
I texted jockey Bernie Dalton Friday morning.
“I would go forward on Cool Jet. If no one goes, he can be in front. Ideally, stalk one or two but you have freedom to do what you want depending on pace. Easy horse to ride.”
The ever-green Dalton and Cool Jet went forward all right, leading every step, winging fences like they were let out of jail and rolling to a 7-length win. Wow.
The 9-year-old Irish-bred hadn’t won a race since the novice stakes at Callaway Gardens in November 2023. He ran twice last year, falling heavily in the Temple Gwathmey in the spring and finishing fourth at Foxfield in the fall. That’s it. He’s won $100,500 this year.
