What day is it? Rebounding from a rare race day Monday and getting ready to do the barn chores Tuesday morning. Feels like a Sunday. Other than my email box and my to-do list. Wimbledon plays in the background, kitchen renovation ongoing, three horses and a cat to feed. Barn chores aren’t nearly as laborious after a good day at the races. And yesterday we had a good day at the races.
Fulmineo loped along on the lead in the $60,000 opener, jumped precisely and staved off all challengers to win by three-quarters of a length. Our second runner with Julie Gomena and our second winner with the Virginia-based trainer. Freddie Procter with another tactical gem, understanding the instructions and carrying them out to perfection. Cool horse with back class, he loved the return to the racetrack.
Renfro’s Reception made it a double, taking the $30,000 maiden starter for Jack Fisher and Jamie Bargary. The son of Street Sense keeps everything to himself at home but put it all together yesterday, jumping well, staying on strongly to draw off easily. “They’ll be some surprised people back at home,” Bargary said as he strolled back to the winner’s circle. We’ll take those kinds of surprises.
Lorraine ran well in her hurdle debut, plenty more to come from her. Mortal Sin lagged too far back and was disappointing.
