Horse power

We took a break in the middle of the day and went down the street to see some horse power. A different kind of horse power.

The Great Race 2024. The endurance car rally began in Owensboro, Kentucky and will finish in Gardiner, Maine. Endurance, as in 2,300 miles over nine days in old cars. Today, they stopped at Ken Walsh’s farm on Silcott Springs Road, about 12 minutes from home. It was a lunch break.

Miles, Chris Ambrose and I walked around in awe.

Fanatics. I love fanatics.

We are fanatics about horses. These people are fanatics about cars. Vintage cars. They came in every shape and size. Mercurys, VW bugs, Chevy pickups, Corvettes, a first-year Jeep Wagoneer, Mustangs, Jaguars, open-air, old-school, hot-rod…130 or so.

I’m not a car guy, never have been, but for a moment or two as I peered into gleaming engines and across polished fenders, I was thinking about changing that. As we got home, my Subaru in the driveway never looked sadder.
