Tough beat

So close. And yet so far.

Welshman nearly secured another Grade 1 stakes win for Riverdee Thursday. The 7-year-old pulled hard throughout the 2 1/2 miles of the Aqueduct hurdle stakes. Despite all the early energy expenditure, the son of Flintshire still reached the lead over the last hurdle, opened up from Swore and looked home. We jumped off the couch, then slumped into the couch. A neck loss to a game Swore. The long, slow, sand slipping through your fingers kind of defeat.

‘Cool horse. Ran hard. Tough beat.’

Those are three of my more popular texts when it’s that close.

I used all three yesterday.

Watch what we watched.

After two photo-finish losses, I actually looked up the Riverdee (and partnerships) stats on Equibase. Just to see. Good to know we’ve had 94 thirds, 95 seconds and 101 wins. It made me feel marginally better.

We have two more chances tomorrow. Pietrelcina and Jhirsch.
