The Belmont Special

Whew, just looked at the calendar. Well, actually just took note of the calendar. Two weeks from yesterday. That’s the day of the first edition of The Belmont Special. New this year, the four-day newspaper will cover the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. A mini racing festival. A racing bonus. A publishing bonus. It’s Saratoga, we’ll be there.

With the addition of the Beverly Steinman Sunday, we should have two runners as well. Awakened and Gordon’s Jet. Now that would be a good way to start the summer.

It looks like the Belmont Stakes is shaping up to be a strong race. Winner of the Kentucky Derby and the winner of the Preakness. Toss in a Peter Pan winner and some other stars and it’s the next best thing to a Triple Crown possibility.

Looking back at a D. Wayne Lukas Stable Tour from last summer, yeah, there’s the Preakness winner.

Seize The Grey: MyRacehorse purchased the son of Arrogate at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale last summer. He rewarded that move with a win here July 29.  “A thousand people were happy. The photographer hugged me. We thought he needed a race. Some of my friends asked me about him and I even touted them off him. That Arrogate was going to be a hell of a sire. He was really going to be a good one. We lost him, that’s too bad. This horse really woke up and his numbers came up good. I think I’ll run him in the Hopeful if he starts training well. You don’t have a lot of choices, there’s one non-winners of two in the book. You can drop in there and that’s not a bad idea, I would look at it. If you’re going to step into the deep end of the pool, the Hopeful is a good option. And it’s been good to me, they told me the other day I’ve won eight of them. I don’t mind taking a chance. I’m getting old, I’ve got take advantage of these things when they can run. Maybe there’s a nine in my future.”

There wasn’t a ninth Hopeful last summer, Lukas wound up skipping the Hopeful with Seize The Grey but there was a seventh Preakness for Lukas. He’ll be aiming for his fifth Belmont Stakes.

See you at Belmont. Two weeks from yesterday.
