No winners at Laurel Park. Serifos jumped well and ran hard to finish second behind a runaway winner in the maiden. Solid effort in his first hurdle start of his 7-year-old season. Hopefully, we can graduate at Colonial Downs later this summer. Jack Fisher’s maidens are stacking up, which makes it tricky. Hopefully two can move forward Monday.
Jhirsch was disappointing in the 115 handicap, finishing fifth. The 5-year-old never looked comfortable way off a rapid pace. One of those races that stretched and strung out early, putting horses on the defensive. Yesterday’s laundry…? Watching it live and processing it later, it proved yet again that Jhirsch doesn’t want the racetrack. We’ll regroup and aim at a handicap at a hunt meet in the fall.
Busy day at Colonial Downs Monday. We entered Fulmineo, Lorraine, Renfro’s Reception and Mortal Sin on the nine-race card. All need to prove something. Fulmineo ran well in his debut at Foxfield and disappointing in his second start at the Iroquois. Hopefully, we can tweak a few things to revisit the first effort. Lorraine makes her hurdle debut, later than we wanted. She’ll need it. Renfro’s Reception showed little at Radnor and needs to improve. Mortal Sin actually ran a sneakily decent race at the Virginia Gold Cup earlier this spring. Is there a pick four?
Breakfast at the rail. First race is 10:45 a.m.
